If you come to Pucon you have to do this. In fact come to Pucon to do this!!!! and do it with PointSouth. If you enjoy a challenge, are reasonably fit and ski red runs you’ll have a great day.

The ski lifts weren’t working, there was lots of snow, the sun was shinning with cloud cover at about 900m (ie below us). We climbed 1,700m in 6 hours, the 2,800m summit. First with ski boots and poles, then with crampons and later with ice pick.

We spent 20 minutes at the summit, gas masks supplied, before skiing down the virgin slopes.

The guiding was superb. Gonzalo could not have done more. He met us the evening before and help with provisions and ski hire. He picked us up from the hotel in the morning and dropped us back exhausted in the evening. He seemed to enjoy the whole day as much as we did.

If you do one thing in Chile do this! 6 stars is I could.

I could not recommend Point South more. A stunning backcountry experience coupled with two incredible individuals left me with an experience I will not forget.

Villarrica, or Rukapillan as the aboriginals refer to it, is a beautiful volcano, piercing the landscape near the town Pucon and Villarrica lake. The climb up is challenging and rewarding, with a beautiful panoramic view of the Andes. As an active volcano, climbers often get to experience the power of Mother Nature first hand; we were treated to deep rumbles and smoke on the climb up, and then a spectacular lava show at the top (at one point, the guides were running away from the volcano!). The descent itself was heavenly. Snow quality was great, and the terrain was way more fun than what you would expect from a stratovolcano.

Perhaps the best part, however, was our guides, Gonzalo and Uber. They truly went above and beyond to make sure we had a great time. From helping us plan our trip’s logistics (Gonzalo, thank you so much for the travel information!) to pushing us when we needed to be pushed, Gonzalo and Uber made us feel welcome and challenged. By the time we were back to the van, everyone was smiling ear-to-ear.

Gonzalo and Uber, thank you so much for your guidance and hospitality! I highly recommend anyone reading this to experience Pucon with Point South. It’ll be an unforgettable time.

Epic Volcano Adventure! I spent a fantastic day ski mountaineering on volcano Quetrupillán with Point South.

Having done most of my skiing in the Alps, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I definitely wasn’t expecting an active volcano to change my plans but an amber alert forced a change of my plan to climb Villarrica. Gonzalo met with me to discuss and plan an alternative adventure. There were several alternatives to choose from and he was very flexible to my aims and happy to discuss the options so I could have the most amazing day of my trip. We decided Quetrupillán should be the objective and I was not disappointed!

Gonzalo drove myself and Uber (my guide for the day) to the base of the volcano at 5am so we could ski through the forest as the sun came up. We reached the top of the trees and were rewarded with glorious views. Being ahead of other groups ascending that day, we had the whole mountain to ourselves for our second breakfast! Fuelled by sunshine and chocolate, we headed on up the slopes which were now gradually increasing in steepness. The wind picked up and made the last few hundred metres of ascent quite exciting as I attempted to balance in the strong breeze! The summit afforded great views of the other volcanoes in the area and the isolation was amazing, we were all alone as we put on warm layers and removed the skins from our skis.

The descent was fabulous, by now the snow had thawed and become lovely powder as we made fresh tracks down the side of the volcano. The terrain was varied with steep wide slopes, gullies and the forest to contend with!

Seven and a half hours later, we were back in the lower forest, picking our way between the trees and heading for the car and a much needed beer!

Point South made this adventure so much more than just a day in the hills, Gonzalo’s planning was excellent, he remained in touch with us by radio through the day and was waiting with beer and snacks at the end. Uber was a great guide and knew just how much to challenge me without pushing me into situations I wasn’t ready for!

I may not have summitted my original objective but I think this adventure was even better! The remoteness and solitude of Quetrupillán has grabbed my attention and I will return for more off-piste volcano adventures with Point South soon!

Thank you Gonzalo and Uber for an amazing experience. I highly recommend Point South for ski mountaineering in Pucón!
